LAB-CITY

International Competition Project
Europan 9
Lillestrøm (NO)
2007.06
The project for a public space in the civic centre of Lillestrøm is a concrete solution to a local problem – the need for a recognizable meeting place – and, at the same time, it works as a small manifesto: the Stortorvet Square is intended as an environmental public deck populated by many dispositifs able to react with the local conditions at the environmental, economical, urban and social levels.

INTRO

Our proposal for Lillestrøm’s Stortorvet has to be intended as a laboratory. We envision it as an extension of the already existing research net into the city, the materialization of the image of an innovative-oriented community. Or, better, it is the application to the whole urban space of the practices that are usually confined in the campus boundaries.
The lab-square opens to new forms of social interaction. The uniqueness of the highly technological devices, their open, exposed nature and their hybrid combination with natural spots may pioneer a new type of sociability. As in a lab, the public is then involved in an experiment, whose final outcomes are not yet traced.

FOCUS

Today we need to bet on public space. The role public space can have in today’s urban condition needs to be reassessed in its traditional forms and concepts.
The public space’s new role can emerge if we abandon the established paradigms of urban design. Spatial planning thus needs to provide specific solutions to specific conditions. Once we are freed of universal theories that have been formulated regardless of the specificity of places, the goal is to step down on reality and set up dispositifs of sociality gauged against the practices effectively undertaken in a restricted place. These dispositifs are sensitive tools: they can be influenced by these local practices and, simultaneously, influence them, in an effect of ‘resonance’.

REPORT

Concept for Lillestrøm central public space

The renovation of the void in the city centre create a new urban landscape where global conditions and local issues materialize in an image of town already emerging from the international community and from politics. The opportunity for this new public space is to represent general conditions creating new structures on a specific place. A space capable, as an “enzyme, to expand its influence, to evolve and promote transformations to new conditions.

- Expanding influence in the city

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Opportunities for Lillestrøm central public space

Lillestrøm new central public space has the challenge to represent innovative community oriented in research and sustainability, and to create supports for its public life. A leap toward the future is made melting environmental conditions and urban landscape. A dialog between civic and private life is tried: urban blocks move toward small single family houses, private gardens move toward monumental central square.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Program for Lillestrøm central public space

In the deep heart of Lillestrøm an enzyme could born and the way of living in innovation can show all its potentiality. A new environmental public deck offers a soil to the community to experiment sustainability, to experience from the inside energetic processes, to find multiple occasions of interaction and sociality sharing ideas of contemporary public life in small city centre lab.
The implementation of laboratory into an open sphere means that the laboratory as well becomes ‘open,’ a new condition referring not only to its degree of accessibility, but also to everyone’s possibility to understand, intervene and alter – with one’s own behavior – the laboratory’s structures.
The dynamics, mechanisms and processes of scientific research are not only made available to and designed for the people (think of the intuitive interfaces of the energy devices, or the ‘readability’ of the data), but are, first of all, exposed. The square then becomes an occasion to spread the information that is usually available only to the specialist circle. This is a political move, as the citizen is presented with the immediate consequences of its and its community’s actions.
The environmental deck is conceived as hybrid machine including both high-technology devices – producing the energy that is employed in the lightening of the square – and areas for spontaneous nature, free to grow and evolve in the whole square.
Some spaces in the energy net and in the nature system are let free for further implementations, or for temporary uses that could claim for a unforeseenable layout.

Pedestrian area – The Deck

A double-coloured UV-resistant granilastic floor-system permits walking and playing safely. Noise absorbing, water-permeable, thermally-insulating and odour-free surface allows a comfortable stay in all seasons. Resistant to snow, ice and de-icing salt the deck provides a useful ground for hard winter with anti-skid properties.

Heating serpentines powered by the wind turbines and photovoltaic cells slightly warm the footpaths, keeping them cleaned from snow and ice during winter seasons.
Stripes of natural ground are provided to offer both an opportunity for community gardens and an habitat for the reproduction of pioneer plants through reproduction centre.
Groups of birch trees provide areas of shadow and intimacy for relax and isolation, in contact with nature.
White asphalt stripes elevate 50 cm from ground level to provide concrete supports for seating, sleeping or skating above them.

Natural system

Groups of birch trees provide areas of shadow and intimacy for relax and isolation, in contact with nature.
The pioneer plants from the reproduction centres would colonize poor grounds enriching in order to let different plants grow.
The people cultivating plants in spontaneous community gardens would enrich the biological diversity of the vegetations.
In time of decades the natural soil area would be completely occupied by bushes, perennial weeds and trees.

Urban oasis

Through photovoltaic panels and wind turbines the environmental conditions produce energy used in the square.
During a whole year the energy production and the energy consumption are in balance.
The energy produced by the devices is used to feed the square global system (light poles, greenhouses, heated pathways, warm green areas). Some devices are used to feed specific special events oriented to the materialization of physical effects of the environmental changes:
- wind-speed spotlight will light some areas of the square with changing intensity;
- a specific area will change its surface temperature according to the wind speed showing temporary snow melting events;
- a system of led-lights, mounted on air or in the ground, will show different levels of photovoltaic panels energy accumulation.

NEW HIGHTECH CAMPUS

Competition project
Confindustria di Bergamo
Albino, Bergamo (IT)
2012.08

FAKE VENICE

International Competition Manifesto
Venice City Vision

Fakeness is today an highly diffused procedure to re-invent things, re-creating them better then before in new phantom images. And that is Fake Venice: a place in which some conditions never realized before are forced to develop in the city.
Fake Venice is a reflection on fakeness and the future of a city. It reflects on the “potential being”: it focuses on one of the potential Venice that have not been realized.

Immesso in un quartiere misto il nuovo edifico cerca in sé stesso affacci e spazi collettivi di socialità.
